Why Inclusive Language Matters

Language has the power to affirm identity, build trust, and promote inclusion. Using respectful and inclusive language can:

  • Support a person's dignity and wellbeing.

  • Foster culturally safe and welcoming environments.

  • Reduce stigma and discrimination.

  • Strengthen relationships and communication.

  • Demonstrate respect for diversity and individuality.

Key Principles

Use Person-Centred Language

Recognise individuals as people first, while also respecting that some people may prefer identity-affirming language.

Examples:

✅ "Person who is transgender"

✅ "Transgender person" (if this is the individual's preference)

✅ "LGBTIQA+SB participant"

✅ "Participant with a same-sex partner"

Respect Individual Identity

Not all people use the same language to describe their identity. Avoid assumptions and use the terms, pronouns, and names that individuals provide.

Ask respectfully:

  • "What name would you like us to use?"

  • "What pronouns do you use?"

  • "How would you like your identity reflected in your records?"

NDIS Practice Standards

The NDIS Practice Standards outline the quality and safety requirements that registered NDIS providers must meet when delivering supports and services.

The standards help ensure services are:

  • Safe and responsive

  • Participant-centred

  • Respectful of individual rights

  • Culturally safe and inclusive

  • Focused on continuous improvement

  • Committed to quality outcomes

Understanding the Practice Standards can help participants know what to expect from their providers and what quality service delivery looks like.
